More about this artwork
Joan Jonas has been a pioneer in experimentation for 50 years and is yet to be beaten. Into her performances she weaves sculpture and installations, cameras and screens. Images, illustrations, animals and language come together with performers, artist and audience. Everything and everyone is connected. In this exhibition you discover various works by Jonas.
My New Theatre VI Outdoor (2006/2024) plays with the artist’s coming and going. She welcomes you from her studio and waves you goodbye after your visit. The work picks up on an early video work. In 1976, Joan Jonas filmed herself for a three-week period. Each morning, she greeted the camera with ‘good morning’, and in the evening she wished herself a ‘good evening’.
This time, Jonas placed a concave mirror between herself and the camera. She turns to her reflection and converses with her mirror image. For each recording she changes the position of the camera, thus filming each time from a different corner of the room. The strange perspective is also seen here in the ‘theatre box’, which according to the artist acts as an extension of her studio.
