Artist Talk: Dennis Tyfus / Tuur & Flup Marinus & Ariadna Estalella Alba

Artist Talk (past)

The artwork of these artists resembles a stage and/or a guided walk, both functioning as a social sculpture. Collective engagement is at the core of these artworks by Dennis Tyfus and Tuur & Flup Marinus & Ariadna Estalella Alba in COME CLOSER. What is the role of the collective where artists, performers, and audience necessarily come together? And what does this mean for the formation of communities and social cohesion? Food for thought for interesting insights in this third Artist Talk. Moderator: Zeynep Kubat.

Collective engagement

The artwork of these artists resembles a stage and/or a guided walk, both functioning as a social sculpture. Collective engagement is at the core of these artworks by Dennis Tyfus and Tuur & Flup Marinus & Ariadna Estalella Alba in COME CLOSER.

What binds these artists is that they create space for communal gatherings and interaction within the sculptural environment of the Middelheim Museum. Dennis Tyfus considers De Nor (2018) as a social sculpture: a place for events and performances. The guided walk A Walk In The Sculpture Park (2024) also facilitates personal experiences with the collection. You are no longer passively observing, but actively participating in an artistic process. In a shared experience with others.

Both artworks also play with breaking down boundaries. Around De Nor (2018) there is fencing, but at the same time, you are both inside and outside. The transitional zone allows for both inclusion and exclusion. A Walk In The Sculpture Park (2024) questions the physical boundaries of the museum: you explore a piece of the museum in a completely new way.

The artworks foster a sense of interconnectedness. They encourage you to reconsider your relationship to the environment and to each other. And thus to pause and reflect on your own role in community building and social cohesion.
