More about this work
Joan Jonas’ works in this exhibition are linked with a mirror as the recurring element. Mirrors reflect how people and things present themselves in a specific context. To what do we pay attention and who watches who?
In Mirror Piece I & II some fifteen women hold tall, narrow mirrors. They move in slow patterns, in a lovely line. Very carefully, making sure that the mirrors do not break. They keep turning towards the spectators, who see themselves looking back in one mirror, then another.
The performers literally present the audience with a looking glass. Creating both distance with the spectator, and also a connection. As spectators we cannot help but consider our place in the big picture.
