Monsters Assembly

The Monsters Assembly collective is an initiative from artistic researchers Helga Baert and Gosie Vervloessem (wpZimmer). It is founded on the artistic practices of Leonardo Delogu (exploring the mobile space) and Carolina Mendonça (knowledge transfer). Together with Dušica Dražić, Alex Schuurbiers and eight other participants, they form the Monsters School.

Performance artist Gosie Vervloessem (1973) investigates the changing position of a researcher in challenging times of crisis. How can we find new ways to produce knowledge and to share it?

This question is also fundamental in the Monsters School project. With this in mind, artist-curator Carolina Mendonça (Brazil) explores how different forms of knowledge exchange influence each other: in new ways, with divergent logic.

As an artist-performer, Leonardo Delogu (1981, Italy) studies the interaction between body, motion and landscape, via the concept of the ‘mobile space’ between a nomadic and settled life.

Monsters School Picnic #4, 2024

Performance, new work (past)

The Monsters School is organising a number of picnic performances to which you are also invited. There, you'll get the chance to share some experiences and food. Together, all those present form a ‘monstrous’ being: something/someone who goes beyond ‘the norm’. This monstrous being in Monsters Assembly can go beyond the individual and mutate towards or connect with something or someone else.

How can people learn better from each other? That is what Gosie Vervloessem, Leonardo Delugo and Carolina Mendonça aim to find out during a 4-week performance, in the company of eight guests. In the Monsters School, within a school-like structure, they exchange their own expertise. In doing so, they investigate new, more physical dynamics, replacing the traditional setup between teacher and student, such as siesta-reading sessions or yoga lessons.

Continuous 01.07 - 27.07. In the Monsters School the programme is developed week by week. Some school activities are very accessible according to the announcements in the Franchise Unit at Atelier Van Lieshout, which is used temporarily as a classroom. Welcome!
