More about this work
There are surveillance cameras all over the world. They are often so familiar that we no longer see them. They are there for our safety, so they say. So we put up with this continuous form of control.
The two works Surveillance Speaker V3 (2018-2024) make you aware that someone is watching you. A surveillance camera mounted on a high pole focuses on you. Using artificial intelligence, it gives spoken feedback on what it observes. The loudspeakers boom: ‘I see …’.
Then let the games begin! Perhaps you'll change your behavior based on what the camera sees and says? Is the camera challenging you, or is it the other way around? The work makes the impact of your behaviour visible and audible to everyone. You shift from being a passive subject to becoming an active player. It’s up to you to ignore the game ... or jump right in.
In another variant of this work, it is sometimes not the camera but the artist himself who gives a live description of what is happening. In the other case, it concerns a machine that interprets the camera image assisted by AI. Does it make a difference to you?
