You will find companionship in greener grounds

Sculpture, new work

Temitayo Ogunbiyi aims to bring attention to less visible cultures in Antwerp. A large stainless steel 'line' represents the walking route between Antwerp and Lagos, where the artist resides. This route connects numerous communities. So does the herb garden, where Flemish crops grow alongside plants from other parts of the world. The smaller play structures are designed specifically for children, our future.

Permanently visible at the art site DE SINGEL.

More about this work

Temitayo Ogunbiyi is keen to draw attention to less visible cultures in Antwerp with the installation. You will find companionship in greener grounds (2024) on the forecourt of DE SINGEL.

A large 30-metre ‘line’ in stainless steel, charts the walking route between Antwerp and Lagos, where the artist lives. The shape is based on a journey across Algeria and over the Mediterranean, in which she connects countless communities.

The intercultural connection is also present in the new herb garden. Indigenous Flemish crops are placed beside plants that are popular in Lagos and elsewhere. They grow together, as an ode to the diverse communities that have settled in Antwerp from across the world, each with their own culinary culture.

The smaller play structures are for children, an audience that the artist prioritises in her work.

The artwork, which is integrated into the On Sculpture trail of DE SINGEL, will be inaugurated with a festive communal meal and a conversation with the artist.
