Liliane V.

Liliane V. (1952) is one of the first Belgian artists to use her own body as an artistic medium. She portrays herself in various cliché women's roles, in different decors. The self-portraits are often erotic and exude a kitsch world of glitter and pretence. Her true identity, however, remains out of reach.

Liliane V. studied at the Antwerp Art Academy and later as a director's assistant in Brussels. Some highlights are her exhibitions in Museum D'Hondt-Dhaenens (1983); in De Brakke Grond, Amsterdam (1986); the double exhibition with Cindy Sherman in the PCBK Hasselt (1987); Liliane Vertessen and Wim Delvoye in the SMAK, Ghent (1989); Woord en beeld in MUHKA (1992); and David Bowie and me in Studio Propaganda, Antwerp (1999). 

Her work is included in the collections at M HKA and Mu.Zee, among others. For her monumental sculpture Heaven and Earth (1997), near the Brussels North Station, she won the Culture Award 1996 from the Flemish Community.
