Chloë Bass

Conceptual artist Chloë Bass (1984, New York) combines her installations with performance and social elements. Her everyday life forms the basis of her research into the public meaning of intimacy. How far does intimacy go for individuals, couples, immediate family, or an entire metropolis?

Bass did residential projects, such as Kupferberg Arts Incubator, New York (2022-2024); NYU Tisch College of the Arts (Future Imagination Fund Fellow, 2022); the Montalvo Art Center, California (Lucas Art Fellowship, 2020-2022).

Her work could be seen in, among others, the Skirball Cultural Center, California; African-American Museum / Art+Practice, Los Angeles; The Pulitzer Arts Foundation; The Studio Museum, Harlem; and Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven (Germany).

Her monography appeared in 2018 at The Operating System, her chapbook #sky #nofilter was published in 2020 by DoubleCross Press. Bass is also a university professor at Queens College (New York).

Performance, new work

Following dramatic social events, Chloë Bass kept snapshots and diary entries. In her artwork she connects this personal memorabilia with the official announcement in many different ways. She got the fragments printed on T-shirts and clothes. Wearing these, she gets others to perform a choreography. As such, the performers become the interpreters of Bass’ personal memorabilia. They are used in expressing her intimate experiences.

Sculpture, on loan

Following dramatic social events, Chloë Bass kept snapshots and diary entries. In her artwork, she connects this personal memorabilia with the official announcement. She does this in many ways, both offline and online. Here, her fragments appear as three series of text panels in the open air. They remind us that behind every big historic event there are also very personal experiences.
