More about this work
The love triangle between artist, art and audience is at the heart of the work by Liliane V. She continuously searches for the best role for herself. Is she the maker, the spectator or the work itself?
She frequently questions her status as a female artist. She portrays herself as a series of female stereotypes: the chick, the bride, the victim or the nun. Her keen sense of aesthetics, humour and provocation provokes strong reactions: a smile, anger or unease. In this way V. is able to address personal stories or taboos.
The neon text She is not... is one such riddle. Who is making this harsh judgement? Is it the artist talking, or somebody else? Then who? And who decides which role you can adopt?
With this work, V. claims the right for herself. You can read and interpret the claim in many different ways. In doing so, she allows us to do the same, for our own lives and our own work.
