One Two Three Swing!, 2024

Sculpture, new work for Middelheim Museum Collection

Imagine that the orange structure of this 'swing' continues under the ground, and that this connects this work with similar examples in other places. Then we can move together in a motion that can be felt all over the world! By swinging together, we activate collective energy. The work encourages exploration of the power of play and teamwork. And also consideration of collective action, democracy and social cohesion.

Continuous viewing. For the best experience, swing with three people side by side. Please take care of children when swinging.

More about this work

Imagine that the orange structure of this ‘swing’ continues under the ground, and that this connects this work with similar examples in other places. Then we can move together in a motion that can be felt all over the world!

Working together and connection are the focus, also in this individual model. The swing seats accommodate three people at a time. All those sitting on the swing must align their movements with others. If it works, you swing together up high into the air.

By swinging, you turn the potential energy into shared motion. The work invites you to explore the power of play and teamwork. And thus to consider subjects such as democracy, collective action and social cohesion. The swings are therefore much more than just a game. They are an experiment in activating collective energy – energy that might be used to change the way we treat the planet and our vision of ‘living together’.
